Modelling Information
I’ve been asked a few times for info by people looking to get into modelling so here are a few useful snippets of info. Feel free to add other information in the comments and I will incorporate it into this list.
The main thing is that reputable agencies don’t charge you to join (they make their money from commission when they get you work). Most top agencies don’t want any fancy shots to start with, they just want simple snapshots of you to see what you really look like. After that if they like you they would send you on a test shoot with a photographer they use. If you are already agency represented and looking to move then the new agency would want to see a decent portfolio. The easiest way to find out what they need is to get in touch with them and look on their websites (see below).
When you start doing assignments (TFP or Paid) consider these points:
- One of the key things is to be professional when dealing with people. Respond to messages promptly and courteously, use good English and provide the required information. Responding to casting calls with “interested” doesn’t really help anyone.
- Make sure you understand the different types of modelling and their requirements. Learn about the different levels of modelling, decide what you are prepared to do and stick to it. Don’t be pressured into doing things you don’t want when on a shoot and always agree beforehand what you will do.
- Follow through on anything you commit to. Turn up on time and do the best job you can. Modelling is very big on word of mouth and your reputation is key to success.
- Look after your body, its your main asset. Make sure you are at your best when going on a shoot, turning up hung over won’t win you any friends.
- Keep your online professional and personal lives separate. Potential clients don’t want to read about your latest exploits out getting drunk.
- Read any model release you are asked to sign, ideally ask to see it before any shoot so you can take your time over it.
- Be realistic about your goals. If you are 5’2″ you are never going to make it as a catwalk model. It is a harsh, image based industry so you need a thick skin as you will get rejected numerous times.

Finally a few other modelling resources on the Internet:
A directory of agencies, photo studios, casting etc at models.com
Models 1 also recommend reading this modelling book as well (its about £18)
Model Bitch an honest view of modelling from a models perspective with a lot of realistic info. All models should read this one. Quite humorous as well!
Alba Models has a useful amount of info including a list of agencies to avoid as well as a long list of decent agencies.
